Blackjack Glossary

Ace |
In the game of blackjack, Aces are valued at either 1 or 11. |
| Blackjack |
When the first two cards dealt to a player add up to 21. For
example, a hand containing an Ace and a ten or an Ace and a King. |

Bust |
When a player or the dealer draws cards that add up to over 21. |
| Double Down |
When a player is confident of beating the dealer, they may
choose to 'double down' or double their initial bet. They are then only allowed
to draw one more card. |
| Draw |
When a player requests and is dealt additional cards. The dealer
is also required to draw. |
| Face Card |
Any picture card such as a King, Queen and Jack. All face
cards have a value of 10 |
| Hard Hand |
When a player or a dealer has a hand without an Ace or a hand
with an Ace that cannot take the value of 11. |
| Hit |
Same as a Draw. (See above). A player requests the dealer to 'hit'
them. |
| Hole Card |
The dealer's face down card. |
| Insurance |
An option for a player to place a side bet of up to half of their original bet
that 'protects' them if the dealer has a Blackjack. |
| Natural |
Same as a Blackjack. (See above). |
| Picture Card |
Same as Face Card. (See above). |
| Press |
When a players increases the size of their bets, usually by
double, after a win. |

Push |
When both a player and the dealer have identical cards. This is
considered a 'tie' and the player's bet is returned. |

Soft Hand |
When a player or a dealer has a hand with an Ace that can take
the value of 1 or 11. |
| Split |
When a player can make separate hands from a pair. |
| Stand |
When a player chooses not to draw any more cards. |
| Stiff Hand |
When a hand has a value of between 12 and 16. |
| Surrender |
When a player has an option to 'give up' half of their bet
and leave the hand. |
